“You may enter…” Armando spoke in a level voice, rising from his desk. He did not wish to come off any worse than he already had, and remaining seated would be rude.
He had made a mistake, and wished to rectify it. Tennesi opened the door, and stood there, looking unsure of even setting foot inside the office. Salazar usually enjoyed the fear he inspired, but this time he did not.
“It is alright Ms. Fernino. I am not upset with you. I confess….I am now aware of the reason for your texting during class. An emergency with your family…I apologize for taking this from you…” he reached out towards her, palm open containing the phone.
The redness in Tennesi’s features was so hot that she felt as though she may spontaneously conbust; she realised that another message must have come through whilst her phone was on his person, hence why he knew it had been an emergency, “Th-thanks” she muttered, walking up hesitantly and taking her phone from him, “-I’m sorry” She said rapidly, “should’ve known it was the rules- but I was worried- should have put it away-” Armando noticed that as she was talking she was looking everywhere else but at him “Won’t happen again!” She finished her apologetic outburst before backing away – nearly tripping over herself in the process – and bolting out the door. She ran down the nearly empty corridor and didn’t stop until she got to the bus stop just outside the school, puffing and panting as she leant against a power-pole. She felt like an idiot, not only do the other kids at school think she was weird, but she managed to make the Principal think the same way! She had never been in trouble at school before, even at her old schools in the UK, so being caught making a mistake like this was embarrassing to say the least.
She suddenly remembered her phone and the emergency, taking it out of her pocket and quickly looking at it, reading the last message: “They’ve been taken to hospital. Mum seems ok, but they’re worried about Archie”, Tennesi threw her phone in her bag, before racing to their house, hoping to contact her sister, “I’ll ring her from there” she decided.
Tennesi did not show to class the following day, and any calls from the school went right to voicemail. Armando was worried. He barely knew the teenager, and had definitely fumbled making a decent first impression. But still, he wished to see if all was alright. Short visit to her house. There were half a dozen homework assignments that needed to be completed, and information about an upcoming essay.
Salazar could at least drop those off to her parents. He disliked driving, but didn’t want to take the bus or be stranded waiting for a cab.
The traffic was abominable, and he growled at the collection of fools that surrounded him. If he could have, he would have taken them all. Grousing his way, he got turned around twice before reaching Tennesi’s address. He went to the door, admiring the garden before knocking.
Tennesi had found out the details of the accident the day before; apparently some drunk driver went straight through an intersection, and crashed into her mother’s car. Both vehicles were twisted wrecks, and the fire department had to use the jaws of life to get to the driver of the other car, who had been killed. In Mrs. Infierno’s car, however, both she and her son had survived, but the paramedics were worried that he may have internal bleeding. Tennesi went to the hospital the same day, and the doctors told her and her sister that her mother had a broken leg, and their little brother did indeed have internal bleeding, but it was severe, and he had been taken into theatre to have it fixed. Tennesi wanted to stay at the hospital, but her sister urged her to go home, “I’ll let you know what happens with the surgery” she told her, and eventually, Tennesi agreed, returning home feeling apprehensive.
The next day, she recieved a phone call from her sister, she informed her the surgery went fine, but that their brother would need to be in hospital for a bit longer yet; also, their mother’s leg was broken in a difficult place, so it also neded surgery. As she was talking on the phone, Tennesi heard a knock at the door and told her sister she had to go before hanging up. She got up and went over to the door, opened it, only to have the last person she expected to see standing there, “Oh, shit!” She cried, mentally kicking herself “I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to not come to school today! Don’t expel me, my mother would kill me! Even with a broken leg, she will literally kill me!!” She was having a total freak-out, and Armando wondered if she overreacted like this often
